Honey: Multi-Purpose Natural Skincare

Did you know that honey can be used for many different uses in your beauty regime? From clearing blemishes to making your skin feel smooth and soft after a bath, honey is the perfect natural beauty treatment for virtually any skin type.

Where does honey come from?

The honey we are all familiar is produced by honey bees. The worker honeybees forage nectar from flowers and store this nectar in their stomachs. The bees then carry the nectar back to the hive where groups of bees work with together to fill the honeycomb in a cycle of regurgitation and digesting the nectar. This partially digested and regurgitated nectar becomes food for the bees and the bee larva (Suarez, Lighton, Joos, Roberts, and Harrison, 1996).

So, what we can all gather from that bit of information is that honey = bee vomit. Nice! I can say that with every bite of my honey-slathered biscuit, I tried hard to erase that mental picture after I found out the first time.

Bees do more than just provide vomit for us humans to consume, they also help pollinate flowering plants by transferring pollen that clings to the little hairs on their legs and bodies from one flower to another flower. I won't get into how flowering plants reproduce, but bees are a big part of the reproduction of flowering plants.

So, with all of this honey being harvested from hives, we can actually use it for more than just eating.
Honey is great for relieving blemishes due to it's antibacterial properties and pore unclogging properties. For blemishes, just take a bit of raw honey and dab it onto the blemish for an overnight spot treatment. A little goes a long way. The honey also seals the blemish better than OTC acne creams and doesn't dry your skin out like OTC acne creams. It also helps reduce inflammation of blemishes. Makes sense when one of the major food sources of honey bees is clover. Clover flower is used in many handmade ointments and salves for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Honey can also be used to help heal minor cuts and burns! I like to use a mixture of honey, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice to help relieve sore throats and coughs. Works pretty well!

In fact, honey is great in your bath and as a cleanser. For those who use Coconut Oil to cleanse, try adding some honey to Coconut Oil and use the mixture in place of an OTC face cleanser. Your face will feel smoother, cleaner, moisturized, and healthier. The cleanser also helps remove oils and bacteria that have built up as well as unclogging pores. Best thing- no unnecessary harsh, dangerous chemicals to worry about!

You can also add honey and about a cup of baking soda to your bath to help smooth, soften and clean skin. Making a honey scrub for bathing or showering is great too. Use a 2:1 ratio of  2 parts honey to one part of either baking soda, sea salt, or raw, unrefined sugar. These relatively inexpensive ingredients can usually be found at your local supermarket. This can be used as a lip scrub as well. For bath and shower scrubs, you can also use herbs in your honey scrub such as lavender, rose petals, or heather flowers for soothing properties.

You can even apply raw honey straight to your face as a facial mask. Just layer the honey on in an even coat as you would any other face mask and let it set for about 20 minutes. Then, rinse off and enjoy healthy, beautiful skin.

Check out the next post on the difference between handmade and commercial products.

Cheers!

Item of the Week: All Purpose Healing Salve

I've been wild-crafting and making my own healing salves for the past 7 years and salves are a must have item for any medicine cabinet. I started out making salves for cuticles and minor cuts. I noticed that the salves I made heal cuts so much faster than Neosporin and has soothing properties you don't necessarily get with Neosporin either. This natural healing salve is an all purpose healing salve meant to help heal minor cuts, scrapes, bug bites, burns, and bee stings. This salve is made with wild-crafted plantain, clover flower, and dog fennel. Plantain is used as a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory as well as clover flower. This is made with White Clover flower instead of Red Clover flower. The anti-inflammatory properties still exist with either. However, after the research and personal testing, the Red Clover flower seems to be more effective than the white. I do have some wild-crafted Red Clover flower along with some other different herbs infusing at the moment. I will make a stronger salve geared towards relieving inflammation as my husband suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis. His knees and hands are constantly in pain, and one thing that helps is for him to stay active. Dog fennel is used to help relieve pain and itching of bug bites and stings. Dog fennel smells similar to cilantro or parsley when you cut it. You could actually just take the juice from the plant and rub it on your bug bites to help heal them. Other plants used in this salve include Salvia May Night which is used for its natural astringent and disinfectant properties. Lavender is used to help calm and soothe skin while White Willow Bark is used to help relieve pain.

I know you'll love this salve as much as myself and my family does. Find it here in my Etsy store.

Come back for my next post about honey.

Cheers!

For Times When You Feel Like Giving Up

It took me a few days to write this because I've been talking down to myself and letting myself worry and blow things out of proportion. Don't be like that. Don't worry and blow things out of proportion. Don't talk down to yourself because everything will prove you wrong in its own time.

So, before I get into the do's and dont's about yourself, which it's really up to you anyway, I'm going to share my story. Some of the parts in this story are grim and others are not so grim. I don't want pity, but please hear me out as I tell my full life story in a nutshell:

I was born in Raleigh, NC at 7:57 am on May 7, 1987. Ever since I can remember, I have not had a father figure in my life. My biological father was a drug addict which is why I never knew him. My mother did not want me around that and fought the court system very hard to keep him away from me even when he wanted visitation. The only reason he wanted to fight for visitation rights in the first place was to make my mother mad. It's all documented in court files and stacks of detailed journals my mother kept throughout the entire process.
Eventually, he gave up wanting to have anything to do with me or my mother, and my mother eventually started dating my current adopted father. He adopted me when I was 2 years old. From what I remember, everything was great until they were married and had my brother. Things fell apart and my adoptive father became verbally and physically abusive toward me and my brother. I don't remember a whole lot during this time except for him calling me a fat pig and choke-shaking my brother. I do remember wanting to be a singer and dancer when I was younger. I loved to sing but never really had the confidence even at a young age to actually sing in front of people. Since then, I've never really wanted to have much to do with him. Eventually, my mother divorced him, and we fast forward to my teenage years. When I was around 13, my mother, my brother, and I moved to Durham, NC where I found my love of dance through classes at school. Mrs. Ledbetter, my dance teacher thought that I should take professional dance classes and I really would have gone, but I had a string of mishaps and allowed them to get in my way. For starters, and here's where it gets grim, my mother was just starting to date a man from Roxboro, NC, Jon who was disgusting in his own way.
At 13, I was subjected to things that no minor should ever have to suffer. Unfortunately, it still haunts me to this day, and I try to stuff those memories way back in the back of my subconscious to where they never see the light of day. I was humiliated and I still feel as though I am stuck at 13 and that I will forever be stuck at 13. It's like time stopped for me. Everyone else passed me by and grew up while I'm stuck to deal with a morbid past on my own because I'm the only who can fix it. During my high school years, I wasn't much involved with the favorable crowd. I had friends and a lot of them were good friends, but I also had friends who I should have stayed away from. I dabbled here and there with things I shouldn't. Things teens get grounded for and get whippings for. I never really understood how my actions affected my mother until I got older and moved out of the house. That's when I really got involved with undesirable situations. I was involved with drugs, binge drinking, and just the wrong people in general. It led to me moving out of Roxboro and moving to Greenville, NC where I ended up in an abusive relationship with my then fiance. I had the sense to leave that behind though. So, I'm glad that I had the nerve to stand up for myself. Everyone should stand up for themselves. You are worth it, regardless of what someone else thinks. Their opinion is invalid. It's what you think of yourself.
Now, I am married to a good man, and we have a beautiful little girl and now live in his grandparents house that was left to him. No, our life isn't perfect. We have issues with people who are not in our family, and we do have our differences from time to time. But, nothing anywhere close to the altercations with my ex-fiance.
Since we have been married and our daughter has been born, I have heard all sorts of nonsense come back through the grapevine to me. I've heard "the only reason Josh and Kristine got married is because Kristine is pregnant." I've heard "they better make sure that house is kept up or they'll be out of there," "I don't ever see that baby outside. It never sees sunlight," and people have told me that his family members don't like me. I'm at a point where I don't care who has said what, when, where, how, or why it was said. It doesn't matter. They don't know the truth, and it's none of their business to find out what the truth is unless I or my husband tells them personally. I don't have very many friends and this is the reason why. I just cut the chord loose because it wasn't helpful for me. Always cut the cord when harmful or potentially damaging people enter your life and try to cause chaos.
So, seeing that I had an opportunity to go back to school to finish out for my bachelor's in Accounting, I seized the opportunity, and I am a little over halfway finished. Yay! During this time, I also found my love for creating soaps that I loved and wanted to share them with other people. That is how Earth N Moon was started almost a year ago. It will be a year come this September!
Since then, I have had so many learning experiences. It has really helped me to grow a tougher skin and realize what is more important. The petty words and actions people put out about you or your business should actually be flattering instead of an insult. When people are jealous, especially in a business setting, it means they find you threatening and that your products are actually tough competition. So, if you find yourself in a situation where there may be some who downplay or talk badly about you, just smile and know that you are something to talk about. Don't stoop to their level and hand it back to them. That's what they want. The best thing to do is go your own way and ignore what they say. They make their selves look bad by talking badly about others. Just for clarification, let's not confuse purposefully deceitful down talking someone or their business with them simply saying they don't like your products. There is a difference. If someone has never purchased or tried your products and they say that your products are not good products, that's deceitful and dishonest behavior because they've never tried the products to form an opinion. So, don't automatically assume that they are being deceitful if they simply don't like your products. There may be a reason. Not everyone is going to like you or your stuff. But, you shouldn't try to make everyone like you or your stuff either. They are allowed to have their own opinions, just like you are allowed to have your opinions.

So, now that you know my life story, I hope you find some sort of strength within yourself to tell yourself you can do this. Don't give up if a bump or massive hole forms in your path. Find a way around it. Be creative. Be an inspiration to others as I hope to be an inspiration to you right now.

Just a few tips that I think might help along the way of your journey:

If you are just starting out in your homemade craft business like I am, you know it's hard to build up your clientele with all of the competition currently out there. Some of your competition has been selling theirs for years and has thousands of good reviews. The important things to remember when you feel the jealousy sink in and try to compare your business with theirs:

  1. Don't compare. Just don't do it. Your items are unique and between the competition and you, everyone's products are different.
  2. Stay true to yourself. Don't get discouraged when it appears that the competition is taking away sales. I'll discuss what to do further down in the post.
  3. Stay positive. Cut the negativity by switching your attitude into a positive outlook. Turn browsing the competition to your advantage. Again, I'll discuss what to do further down the post.
I'm just now starting to understand why a lot of people do not own their own business aside from the start up costs and the responsibility. You trying to sell your ideas and your hard work to people especially if you hand make your products. If you have a Facebook page for your business, you'll know that likes and reviews are important. However, you can't make people like or review your products. They'll come with time. Sometimes, it's to whom you are reaching, not that people don't like your products. So, don't beat yourself up, you're just not reaching the right crowd. Plus, some people are fickle. They'll like your page and someone might say something about your products in a negative light that has never tried them, or you might have a particular viewpoint on a matter and they'll stop following you. It's okay. That's their right. Don't let it discourage you. If I were you, I wouldn't even look at the likes. It's not representative of what your products are about or your company, or even you as a representative of your company. Just breathe, relax, and let it roll off. Did you know some very successful companies don't have that many likes on their pages? Heck, some don't even have Facebook pages!

All in all, it's what's best for you and your business.

You got this, kid! You can do this! It's not a crazy idea, and yes, it will work if you believe and try hard enough. Your ideas are important. You are important. Make yourself known. Make your business known. Celebrate! This is a time of rejoice because you've found something you're good at. You've found something that you feel free and comfortable on which to earning a living. Wait, you're still worried and worried about everyone else? Okay, let's stop again.

  • Don't even think about the competition, at least not right now.
  • Don't worry about everyone else.
  • Turn that frown upside down. You've got a lot to live for, even if it's just you. You mean a lot, and you were born for a reason. Seek out your purpose. Travel, try different things, get out there and go!
  • Don't stay in one spot. Keeping moving your business as far as you want it to go. Your business is your canvas, and you are the painter. You have the power to do what you want, when you want it, and how you want to do it.
  • Money is just a stepping stone. Yes, it takes money to make money, but if you really want to start your project, you'll find a way even if it is slowly saving up to start a project. You'll get there.
  • Be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day as they say! Don't get burned out by the advice of others or your work pace. Slow and steady wins the race. Wait, there is no race! Life is not a race. Your business will come to fruition with patience, knowledge, the application of that knowledge, proper resources, and proper timing. It'll come, trust me.
The important thing to remember is that YOU shape your future regardless of others.

From my heart to yours,
From one person to another,
Kristine

From My Garden

Yes, the title picture is from my garden. It is a Spearmint plant. Anyone who knows me knows that I love plants, and when I say I love plants, I run down to Lowe's quite often trying to find plants on clearance to save. I absolutely love taking care of plants and helping them grow so I can either use them in my bath products, my cooking, or just to enjoy looking at them.

I feel at peace when I work in my little garden with my plant friends. I would like to get some more and I think I will once I have a little extra money.

So, this is just a blog post about the plants that I put around my house.
Oregano Plant

Oregano is a wonderful addition to any herb garden or garden in general. It is easy to keep up and looks great as an ornamental plant. Did you know you can easily propagate cuttings from Oregano plants?

How to easily propagate Oregano:

  1. Choose branches or stalks of Oregano that are healthy and green.
  2. Make sure you make a clean cut close to the base of the plant.
  3. Place the cutting(s) in a vase or glass of water as you would cut flowers.
  4. Wait at least a week or so, and you should start to see tiny roots that have grown near the bottom of the cuttings.
  5. Remove the cuttings from the glass or vase and plant in potted soil.
  6. Once the cuttings have taken to the soil, you can either plant them in the ground or leave them in the container.

I found some black petunias mixed in with some red and yellow verbena at Lowe's. It was the only black petunia they had and it instantly caught my eye. I love the velvety look of the black petunia in contrast with the yellow and red verbenas.

I'm not really fond of the flavor of Tarragon, however, I like the smell, and the small yellow flowers that it produces are pretty. I have a patch of Mexican Tarragon in my garden right next to a small patch of Rosemary. My Rosemary has not fared very well until I placed some other herbs around it. I guess it was lonely.

I also love my lilies along the side row of the yard. Every year, they bloom peach and purple. They are called Peach Candy Day lilies.

I have not seen this color in any of the local stores around me. I also have some orange and black tiger lilies that bloomed this year. Before they opened, something ate one of the buds off of my black and orange lilies. I had planted the bulbs the season before and I had been waiting anxiously all year for them to bloom. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper, but they will come back next year.

I have some solid black lily bulbs that I bought this year. So, I am hoping that if I throw them out there this year, next year they will bloom. I know spring is usually the season for planting bulbs, but in my experiences, usually as long as it is in spring or summer when the ground is warm, they'll still bloom. Don't believe everything you read on packages. Some plants that come with the little information cards are incorrect. The card will read that the plant does best in full, direct sun which is not always true. I have gotten plants that the information card says full, direct sunlight and in fact, the plant did better in indirect sun. One example is verbena. As mentioned before, I have red and yellow verbena that seems to do well in half-day sun. I also have Aztec verbena that likes half-day sun although the information card reads full sun. Verbena is also supposed to be a perennial. Two years ago, I planted purple verbena as directed by the information card- in the sunniest location and it never came back. I have also planted some other plants that have claimed they were annuals such as Dianthus. However, mine have come back for the past 2 years! I know that there are some perennial varieties of Dianthus such as Sweet William, but when people buy a plant, the care cards should be taken into slight consideration.

Viola Mixed Colors

Another thing I've learned just by taking care of my plants is that they seem to do better when they are placed next to a garden fountain. I have one in my front yard and the plants immediately around the fountain are always bigger than the plants farther away.

I also love the color combinations of purple, yellow, white, and orange among the violas in my garden. My mother-in-law has some wild purple and yellow violas that grow in her front yard and they come back every year. This is the first year I have grown violas in my garden and they have grown into a bush! I have noticed that they are passing already. I'm not sure if it is due to the heat or whether it is something else, but I'll have to take a closer look.

I love petunias. They last quite a while if you keep them watered properly. They are best for containers when you want to add a little color. I usually try to get various different colors and mix and match them in my containers.

Of course, Basil and Spearmint are in my garden as well along with Bee Balm, Cilantro, and Lavender. The Lavender and Cilantro has already bloomed. I'm waiting on the Bee Balm to start blooming so I can witness what they will look like. I am very excited about that.

I'm not sure if you can see it in the picture of the Aztec Verbena, but there are some Coleus in the background I have planted in a pot. They are HUGE, a lot larger than I have ever grown before. I am happy with the way they are growing this year.

I have combined pinks of different flowers together in a box container this year. It is filled to the max with Aztec Verbena, pink Begonias, and pink Petunias. The different shades complement each other nicely, I think. So, for the rest of the blog post, I am just going to show my pictures of the plants I have around my house. Enjoy!

Summer Essentials for Kissably-Smooth Skin

It's officially Summer and what better time to talk about the new skincare from Earth N Moon? Summer brings rising temperatures and with rising temperatures there is a greater chance of becoming sun burned and your skin being dehydrated, damaged, and unhappy.

Fresh Citrus Lotion
Photo taken by: Kristine with Earth N Moon
Skin needs to be nourished in Summer just as it needs to be nourished in Winter. Our line of lotions can certainly nourish and moisturize skin. Made with shea butter, avocado oil, and sweet almond oil, our lotions are vitamin-rich and packed full of nutrients to help nourish skin to the max. This is a rich, non-greasy formula so it absorbs quickly. Our lotions also contain essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances which also makes them better for your skin than leading name brand lotions. Our newest scent, Fresh Citrus, is scented with citrus essential oils. So, you'll want to use caution in the sun and avoid prolonged sun exposure when you have this on. If you do not use caution with citrus essential oils and some mint essential oils, prolonged sun exposure can cause burns. So, for best results, I would recommend using lotions with citrus essential oils at night or when you will not be out in the sun most of the day.

You can use this lotion on your body, hands, and even feet. However, for rough, dry, cracked, and calloused feet, I recommend my new Beautiful Feet Foot Cream. It contains luxurious oils such as Baobab Oil which is packed with vitamins and nutrients. The best part about Baobab Oil is that it doesn't clog pores. There may be a future face cream featuring Baobab Oil. It is expensive, but it is a fabulous oil that absorbs quickly and moisturizes skin for a healthy look and feel.

Naturally, Honey Lip Balm
Photo taken by: Kristine with Earth N Moon
Also, with the increase in temperatures, sensitive skin such as lips, will need protection as well. Our new, all-natural Naturally, Honey lip balm is perfect for protecting lips from the elements. Although it contains real honey and natural, yellow beeswax, it is not considered flavored. Honey in lip balm is used to moisturize and heal lips as well as being a disinfectant for lips.

So, yes, you can avoid dry, dehydrated skin in the summer! Make sure you drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest at night, and make sure you use a lotion and lip balm daily. Also, to avoid sun burn, use a sunscreen with the appropriate SPF. I use at least a 30 on myself and a 50 on my daughter. Make sure to avoid prolonged sun exposure as well. Even though you are applying sunscreen regularly, the heat can still dehydrate you fairly quickly without you knowing right away. Try to stay cool and remember your skin needs all the love it can get. After all, skin is the largest organ of the body!

Check back with us as we introduce some new items in our next post! We will also feature a new item for our item of the week on Sundays.

Cheers!

New Arrivals from Earth N Moon

Hello lovies! Looking forward to a great summer? With all of the fun and sun of family vacations, hiking through the various nature trails, camping, swimming, fishing, and outdoorsy things that everyone is looking forward to in summer, I must be a raincloud on the parade! I know I sound nagging, but let's think about our skin here! Being outside in the heat will dry your poor little lippies out quick not to mention the rest of your skin! Plus, there are all sorts of creepy, crawly, blood thirsty ticks and mosquitoes that live outdoors that would love to feast on you! Plus, when you come back all hot, sweaty, and stinky, you'll need to clean up and take a bath.

With all of this sounding like I'm being more negative than positive about summer, there is a good side to all of this. Trust me, I love being outside in the dirt and doing all of that stuff. However, I also like to keep my skin hydrated, my lips protected from the elements, and I love to take a nice long bath after being outside all day.

What is the point of all of this I'm rambling about? Well, Earth N Moon has just put out some great new products and all of them are must-haves for making sure you and your family have the best summer in terms of safe and effective skincare.

No More Bites Bug Spray
Photo by:Kristine with Earth N Moon
Who likes to go 4 wheeling? If you're like me, it is a fun time in the woods away from technology and cell phones. However, being in the woods without proper repellent is a not a good idea, at least where I'm from which is North Carolina. Here, we have all sorts of little bugs and huge bugs that are waiting to turn you into a snack the moment you walk out of your house! Scary, right?! If that doesn't scare you enough, wooded areas are a great home for ticks which carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I won't get into the details of these nasty illnesses for the sake of staying on topic, but they are very serious illnesses in which can land you in the hospital.

So, with the mosquitoes and ticks everywhere, Earth N Moon's all natural bug spray is a good way to
keep those little biters off of you this summer and keep you out of harm's way! It is made with natural oils and essentials oils to naturally repel mosquitoes and ticks. It is deet-free, alcohol-free, preservative-free, and quick-drying. I use it every time I go outside since the mosquitoes and ticks love me! My husband uses it all the time as well since he works outside every day. He has had no issues with bites this season. It also lasts longer too! I've noticed that many name brand repellents last less than an hour. This natural formula I concocted lasts at minimum 2 hours. It was funny (not really, but still) because when I first tested it out, I forgot to spray the tops of my exposed feet in my flip flops before going outside and I got bites on my feet but no where else. So, give this a try. It can be found in the Etsy store.

All Purpose Healing Salve
Photo by:Kristine with Earth N Moon
For those of you who are allergic to poison ivy and poison oak, being outside in summer means double-checking to make sure you are not brushing up against one of these plants. I had a run in with some Cow Itch when I was younger and it was absolutely the worst experience. I had a rash everywhere! When I say everywhere, I mean it was around my eyes, in my nose, my ears, all over! I was miserable. So, the best way to prevent a catastrophic break out is by avoiding contact with poisonous plants and making sure you wear appropriate shoes and clothes when hiking on nature trails and in the woods. However, if you do happen to brush against a poison ivy plant unknowingly and develop a little rash, my new All Purpose Healing Salve is what you need! It works wonders on bug bits, bee stings, rashes, patches of break out due to poison ivy and poison oak, as well as healing minor cuts, abrasions, and burns. It is made with wild-crafted dog fennel, white clover flower, and plantain to help relieve pain, inflammation, and relieve itching and burning of skin irritations. It is also made with Salvia May Night that I personally grow in my garden as well as Lavender, White Willow Bark, and essential oils which are used as natural antiseptics and disinfectants. I've been wild-crafting and making my own salves for personal use for the past 6 years. However, I am just now starting to feel comfortable selling them. I started out making salves to use on cuts and scrapes. Then I found other purposes for salves such as skin irritations from bug bits and poisonous plants that I just had to put myself out there with everyone else. It does this trick and stays put once you put it on and lasts longer than most ointments.

Now on to those sensitive lips! Yes, they need love and attention too especially in heat and sun. My new lip balms make fun in the sun fun again with new Watermelon, Strawberry Sorbet, and Cool Peppermint flavors. I even offer a 2-pack which includes 1 Watermelon lip balm and 1 Strawberry Sorbet lip balm. The Cool Peppermint lip balm is tingly and cooling on the lips. So, if you decide to go out in the sun or just outside in general, make sure you are protecting your lips with a lip balm! I have also made a batch of all-natural beeswax and honey called Naturally, Honey. It is made with unbleached beeswax (yellow beeswax) and local natural honey. I LOVE this lip balm. So, I'll make sure to update this post as soon as they are labeled and put on the store site. Ya'll will fall in love with them too, I'm positive!

Now that you've seen our new items up for grabs in the Etsy store, have fun this summer without being ate up by bugs or having burned and chapped lips. Heal those wounds naturally and get back out there having fun before fall gets here!

Come back to my next post about thirsty skin during the summer months. I'll be talking about my lotions, foot creams, foot soaks, and antibacterial sprays in the next post. See you soon and stay safe!

Cheers!

DIY Laundry Soap

For those who follow me on Facebook or follow Earth N Moon on Facebook, yesterday I posted about making laundry soap. It's very simple to make and most of the items can be found at the grocery store.

Why would you want to make your own laundry soap?

  • It's cheaper
  • It cleans better
  • You can adjust the recipe to suit your needs
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Easy to make
This takes little time to make. All you need is the following:

4 lb. Baking Soda (1 big box)
3 lb. Washing Soda (1 box)
1 bar Fels Naptha
1/2 bar Ivory Soap (original)
10 ml scent/essential oil

If you'd like, you can substitute borax for baking soda. You can also substitute your essential oil and fragrance oil for another oil. For example, you can use lavender or bergamot or orange. Whichever you'd prefer. I prefer a lemon and flowery fragrance. Lemon and lavender go nicely together as well. You could also do all fragrance oil instead of essential oil. Just make sure you use a fragrance oil from a well-named and trusted source. If you don't want scent, omit the scent and essential oils.

If you want to make a test batch, here is the recipe for that:

1 c Baking Soda
1 c Washing Soda
1/4 c Fels Naptha
1/4 c Ivory Soap
2 ml scent/essential oil

All you need to do is:
  1. Combine your baking soda or borax and your washing soda
  2. Grate your Fels Naptha bar and Ivory Soap bar
  3. Combine your grated soap with your powders
  4. Add your scents or essential oils
  5. Mix well
And you have homemade laundry detergent! Make sure you test out your laundry detergent on a small spot of clothing before adding it to a full load.

Also, make sure if you own an HE machine that you check the owner's manual and instructions before using homemade laundry detergents.

Hope you enjoy making your own laundry soap and let me know your thoughts and questions in the comments below!

Cheers!
