DIY Laundry Soap

For those who follow me on Facebook or follow Earth N Moon on Facebook, yesterday I posted about making laundry soap. It's very simple to make and most of the items can be found at the grocery store.

Why would you want to make your own laundry soap?

  • It's cheaper
  • It cleans better
  • You can adjust the recipe to suit your needs
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Easy to make
This takes little time to make. All you need is the following:

4 lb. Baking Soda (1 big box)
3 lb. Washing Soda (1 box)
1 bar Fels Naptha
1/2 bar Ivory Soap (original)
10 ml scent/essential oil

If you'd like, you can substitute borax for baking soda. You can also substitute your essential oil and fragrance oil for another oil. For example, you can use lavender or bergamot or orange. Whichever you'd prefer. I prefer a lemon and flowery fragrance. Lemon and lavender go nicely together as well. You could also do all fragrance oil instead of essential oil. Just make sure you use a fragrance oil from a well-named and trusted source. If you don't want scent, omit the scent and essential oils.

If you want to make a test batch, here is the recipe for that:

1 c Baking Soda
1 c Washing Soda
1/4 c Fels Naptha
1/4 c Ivory Soap
2 ml scent/essential oil

All you need to do is:
  1. Combine your baking soda or borax and your washing soda
  2. Grate your Fels Naptha bar and Ivory Soap bar
  3. Combine your grated soap with your powders
  4. Add your scents or essential oils
  5. Mix well
And you have homemade laundry detergent! Make sure you test out your laundry detergent on a small spot of clothing before adding it to a full load.

Also, make sure if you own an HE machine that you check the owner's manual and instructions before using homemade laundry detergents.

Hope you enjoy making your own laundry soap and let me know your thoughts and questions in the comments below!

Cheers!
